Our news partners at The Seattle Times report that union negotiators have reached a tentative agreement with Allied Waste, one of the two garbage collection companies whose labor agreements were set to expire at midnight Wednesday, March 31.

This means that, at least for now, there will be no garbage strike in Normandy Park, since Allied is the provider here.

According to The Times:

Allied Waste Services, which provides trash collection for about 123,000 homes in King and Snohomish counties, confirmed Wednesday evening that a labor pact had been reached.

But the region’s biggest garbage company, Waste Management, which services more than 1 million customers, said its negotiations with 500 union garbage haulers have stalled, increasing the possibility of a garbage-collection strike for its customers across much of King and Snohomish counties starting Thursday.

Waste Management serves the Burien area, and, far as we know, the cityfolk there had no contingency plan. NP’s leaders had a deal where they would lease equipment back from Allied Waste, and, if necessary, have their own public works staff go out and collect garbage.

According to the March 26 City of Normandy Park City Manager’s Report, if garbage haulers in Normandy Park go on strike this week:

“The City has the right to require Allied-Republic to lease their equipment to the City, in the event of contract default, so City employees can collect solid waste.”

That’s right – if a strike is called (which could be as early as midnight Wednesday, March 31st), you just might see city workers out collecting garbage and recycling beginning Thursday, April 1st (and that ain’t no joke).

However, City Manager Doug Schulze warns us not to expect to see any high-ranking officials going door to door collecting trash.

“If it got to that, we’d have members of our public works staff out there,” he said. “And we’d probably set up some drop-off stations for people to bring their trash and recycling.”

Too bad. We were so looking forward to seeing Mayor George Hadley in a bright yellow vest hanging off a big ol’ garbage truck lifting cans.

Here’s the actual announcement from the newsletter (sign up here to receive it yourself free from the city):

Potential Sanitation Worker Strike
Teamsters Local 117 and 174 represents sanitation workers employed by Allied – Republic and Waste Management. Contracts between the sanitation workers (trash and recycling collection) Allied-Republic and Waste Management will soon expire.

If agreement is not reached on a tentative contract proposal, sanitation workers may vote to authorize a strike as early as Monday, March 29th. If Teamsters Local 117 and 174 vote to strike, it is likely that landfill workers at King County transfer stations will honor the picket line. Allied-Republic provides solid waste and recycling collection service to Normandy Park residences under contract with the City of Normandy Park.

Based on terms of the contract, the City has the right to require Allied-Republic to lease their equipment to the City, in the event of contract default, so City employees can collect solid waste. Contract default would occur if Allied-Republic fails to perform for a period of five consecutive days. City staff will have plans in place to provide, at a minimum, basic solid waste disposal options for residents in the event of a strike. However, conversations with representatives from Allied-Republic as well as Teamsters suggest both sides are optimistic about reaching a tentative agreement over the weekend.

Last fall, a hardy band of volunteers ventured down into the ravine beneath the Sylvester Road bridge in Normandy Park, where they worked to clear hundreds of pounds of garbage around Fox Creek, a tributary stream to Miller Creek. While these folks removed most of the trash, some remains, and more hardy souls are requested to help haul the rest of this garbage out this Saturday, May 16th between 9am and 11am.

There is also an abundance of invasive English ivy that has grown up many of the trees. If left unchecked, this invasive weed will kill the trees and deprive the stream of the benefits they provide. Volunteers will girdle the ivy at the base of the trees, greatly extending their lives.

So, once again the call goes out to watershed citizens who will brave the steep slopes of Fox Creek ravine to care for this ecological resource and improve water quality downstream:

WHAT: Fox Creek volunteer garbage/ivy removal in the ravine below Sylvester Bridge

WHEN: Saturday, May 16th from 9am to 11am

WHERE: Meet at the hairpin turn on 11th Place SW just down the hill from the intersection with Sylvester Road, Normandy Park.

INFO: Please RSVP via email to Dennis Clark so he can plan accordingly and to guarantee your doughnut!

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING:

  • Shoes with gripping soles and good ankle support – we’ll be on steep slopes
  • Clothes that can get dirty if you slip
  • Layers of clothing – you’ll warm up quickly moving up and down the slope or gathering trash along the creek
  • Hard hat if you have one – I have plenty if you don’t
  • Sun glasses or safety glasses if you wish to use them (primarily due to bushes)
  • A water bottle

PARKING:

  • Parking is limited. If you can carpool, walk, or bike, that would be great. We will meet at the hairpin turn at the top of 11th Place S.W., just below the intersection with Sylvester Road. If you aren’t familiar with this location and need to MapQuest or Google it, use the following as your destination address: 16856 11th Pl. S.W., Normandy Park, 98166.
  • If you drive, proceed down 11th Place S.W. past the hairpin and park as far off the road as you can. Take care to avoid blocking driveways or damaging the neighbors’ vegetation.

STUDENT PARTICIPATION:

  • Students 16 and older are welcome.
  • Those under age 18 should download and complete this form with a parent or guardian’s signature to allow their participation. Those over 18 do not need to fill out the form; they can sign in on Saturday.

Normandy Park residents who feel like playing Santa a day early, and who are fed up with having to store their own garbage and/or recycling can actually dispose of their stuff today (Wed. 12/24) between 9am and 3:30pm.

Here’s an update from Allied Waste/Republic Services:

Allied Waste/Republic Services Emergency Service Alternative for Normandy Park

In recognition that the extended inclement weather has created storage issues for garbage and recycle commodities, the Bellevue Division is offering a temporary solution:

Today Normandy Park has agreed to provide access to two community sites where residents who wish to utilize this opportunity to dispose of their recyclables and garbage may do so. These sites are cleared of snow and will allow Allied Waste /Republic Services to spot attended vehicles so residents can dispose of household recyclables and garbage.

  • This service will be available from 9 AM till 3:30 PM, Tuesday Wed., December 24, 2008
  • One vehicle will collect garbage only and another will collect recycle only
  • Waste Service employees will monitor for contamination and customer compliance

Site 1 is the loop drive and parking lot area in front of City Hall, just off of SW 174th where we placed the container after the windstorm two years ago.

Site 2 is the parking lot at Marvista Park next to the Public Works shop at 19900 4th Avenue SW.
