City Manager’s Weekly Report
for week ending Sept. 20, 2019

Port of Seattle Economic Development Grant.  The City of Normandy Park is about to finish reviewing a BERK Consulting hotel study, developed through a grant from the Port of Seattle Economic Development Program.  The study identifies the opportunities and challenges of locating a hotel in Normandy Park, and describes the trends that make investing in Normandy Park boutique or niche hotels desirable and profitable.  The report looks at issues surrounding occupancy rates, the average daily rate per room sold (ADR), and revenue per available room (RevPAR), all comparison measures for the economic viability of hotels.  Such information indicates that while numerous rooms have been added to the local market in recent years, the long-term outlook for niche hotel rooms in Normandy Park is strong, chiefly based on growth in airport traffic.  The study suggests several options that might appeal to hotel developers, including extended stay operations and mixed-use investments, hotels linking co-working or event space, or partnering on-site with residential or commercial interests.  The study suggests a hotel recruitment strategy that avoids competition with current hotel proposals in the City of Burien.

Contract for Architectural Services with Miller Hull Partnership, LLC.  A contract for architectural services for future city facilities on the City Hall Park site, including a recreation center, should be in draft by next Thursday.   Subsequent to review of the draft contract, it will be placed on the October regular City Council agenda.
