REMINDER: Rain, shine or wind, Burien’s annual Polar Bear Plunge will dive into Puget Sound from Three Tree Point’s south beach at Noon on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020.

This annual tradition draws hearty (some say “foolish”) people from all around the area, all braving cold air, sometimes warmer-than-the-air water, to ring in the New Year and have a grand ol’ silly time together.

One lucky diver will take home the coveted Polar Bear Plunge trophy (pictured above), which they are required to return at next year’s event.

Weather forecasters are predicting a high near 49, with an 80 percent chance of showers, breezy winds with gusts as high as 34 mph, so be sure to wear waterproof shoes, rain gear and to bring lots of towels.

Here’s the forecast for New Year’s Day:

New Year’s Day: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 10am, then a chance of rain and thunderstorms after 10am. High near 49. Breezy, with a southwest wind 23 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
